Toxic Torts and Environmental Contamination

We are increasingly aware and increasingly concerned about health risks from contaminants in our environment.  With good reason and a growing body of supporting scientific literature, we worry about the quality of the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the products we bring into our homes.

Oftentimes, the health effects from a toxic exposure are delayed.  The time from exposure to manifestation of a brain tumor, for example, can be a few years on up to 25 years or more.  The science involved in proving the health effects of a toxic exposure is enormously complex and so it is crucial that these claims be investigated and handled by attorneys who have experience and skill in this area.

The firm’s attorneys have extensive experience representing individuals who have been exposed to toxic substances and chemicals.  Some examples of the firm’s work in this area include the following:

  • The firm represented a class of residents in Northern Illinois who were alleged to have been exposed to historical releases of toxic chemical waste from a nearby manufacturing operation.  The class settlement resulted in the creation of a medical screening fund so that residents could determine if they had evidence of brain tumors.  The case also involved individual claims on behalf of more than two dozen individuals who already had been diagnosed with brain tumors.

  • The firm has represented a number of research chemists who worked at the Rohm and Haas Company (now Dow Chemical) and who developed brain cancers while working at the company’s chemical research facility.
  • The firm has represented numerous children who developed central nervous system dysfunction due to toxic lead exposure in their homes.
  • The firm represented two sisters who both developed thyroid cancer years after, as school girls, they played in a field where radioactive waste had been dumped.
